Sheffield Wednesday have spiralled into chaos since Christmas and Barry Bannan has shared his view on one factor that may be contributing to that – the EFL investigation looking into the club.
What did he say?
Bannan is one of the senior figures in the squad and he has been quite vocal recently, speaking out about the awful display they put in against Brentford last weekend.
Now, he has commented on the EFL investigation that is questioning whether Dejphon Chansiri broke financial fair play rules when he bought Hillsborough, a factor that has the potential to cause disharmony in the form of a points deduction.
However, the Scot denies that it is a negative influence on the squad currently, which is a little bit worrying as it hints at a factor under control as being the cause behind an awful run of two wins in 14 league games.
Speaking about the lingering presence of the investigation, as reported by YorkshireLive, Bannan said:
“I can only speak for myself. I don’t know what everybody else is thinking but I have got a good idea of what they are thinking.
“I don’t think the deduction has ever come into the conversation between the boys.
“What we are meant to do is go out and win for the club and we are not doing it at the minute.”
Need for leadership
It is interesting that a long-term servant like Bannan has been commenting on a variety of issues of late, as that is something that he needs to be doing with the squad on a day-to-day basis.
As one of the eldest players left in the squad, following Sam Hutchinson and Keiren Westwood’s banishment, it is integral that he shows leadership.

The current squad showed the ability to be placed third in the Championship at Christmas, and that means they need to display the correct mindset if they are going to get things back on track stay clear of trouble.
There may be a healthy nine-point gap to the relegation zone but they are one of the most out of form teams currently, and a points deduction before the end of the season would plunge them into trouble.
Calling Premier League experts ONLY: Which year were these top flight clubs formed?
If Bannan can get his teammates to focus on what’s most important, along with Garry Monk, then they should be able to put an end to the bad form, though the match against Brentford highlighted that there are several issues to iron out.
